Hello everybody, it’s John, welcome to my recipe page. Today, we’re going to make a special dish, not my shepard's pie. One of my favorites. For mine, I am going to make it a bit tasty. This will be really delicious.
My husband grew up with a hamburger pie casserole that his mom made, which was actually one of the first posts here on the blog ( that is in dire need of updating, but is still well loved ). He also grew up enjoying roasted lamb on holidays. The difference between shepherds pie and cottage pie is that the former uses lamb and the latter uses beef. Besides that, both dishes are basically the same.
Not My Shepard's Pie is one of the most popular of current trending meals in the world. It’s enjoyed by millions every day. It’s simple, it’s quick, it tastes delicious. Not My Shepard's Pie is something that I’ve loved my whole life. They’re fine and they look fantastic.

It's French Canadian and called Pate Chinois, which translates to Chinese Pie. It's a little twist on shepherd's pie but it's simple, delicious and sticks to your ribs on a cold, wintry night! Leftovers (not typical in my house!) are even better as the flavors all blend nicely. My mom was British, I was born and lived in England, but when we moved to America even my mom made it with beef and still called it Shepherds pie.
Steps to make Not My Shepard's Pie:
- Put water on to boil for sweet potatoes. They will need to boil for about 10-15 minutes.
- While the sweet potatoes are cooking, brown meat with salt, pepper, and horseradish. Do NOT drain grease.
- Once the meat is browned add in enough all purpose flour to soak up the grease, add in can of beefy mushroom soup and mixed veggies. Add more salt and ground black pepper, especially salt.
- When the sweet potatoes are done, drain and put in mixing bowl. Add butter, milk, salt, pepper and ginger and mix. Once mixed add in sour cream and mix thoroughly.
- Place meat mixture into casserole dish, top with mashed sweet potatoes. Bake at 350 for 35 minutes, remove add Monterey cheese and bake until cheese is melted.
Leftovers (not typical in my house!) are even better as the flavors all blend nicely. My mom was British, I was born and lived in England, but when we moved to America even my mom made it with beef and still called it Shepherds pie. Lamb was not familiar to most Americans and has only recently grown in popularity. Shepherd's pie is traditionally made with a ground-lamb filling, but we make ours with ground beef. The sauce is really simple and flavorful, but the best part is the insanely fluffy mashed potato.
